Roscommon Town ... Leisure

Golf:

Roscommon Golf Club is located on rolling pastures adjoining the old Mote Park Estate and boasts an
18-hole championship course of outstanding merit

The new 6,290 metre course, situated within half a mile of the town, looks like maturing into one of the very best parkland courses in Ireland. A par 71 course with a number of very testing holes, it features man-made lakes on the tricky 13th and multi-tiered greens which have been constructed with the very latest technology to give an all-weather surface.
The Club always boasted an excellent practice fairway which has been retained in the new development. Included in the development programme was the installation of a state of the art irrigation system to all eighteen greens.
The Club has a proud record of achievement, having produced seven young international golfers in the last two decades. The Roscommon clubhouse was completed in 1996. It offers full bar and dining service. The dining room has capacity for 120 persons and can accommodate individuals or groups with equal ease.
Roscommon’s central location and its proximity to Dublin make it an ideal golfing destination for visitors. The club welcomes green fee and society golfers. Society rates and catering terms by arrangement with the Secretary. If required, the club will also arrange accommodation locally according to your requirements. Contact:  090 66 26382

Roscommon Races:

Enjoy award winning racing at Roscommon race course. The racecourse is just over 3 furlongs in length. It is an oval track and is right handed. It is rich in history having originally been run in 1837 by the British military who had a base in Roscommon town. It is a modern race course with stand and reserved enclosures. Many famous horses have run at the Roscommon races such as Imperial Call (Cheltenham Gold Cup winner) and Enzeli (Ascot Gold Cup winner) and the event is attended by all the major trainers, owners, horses, jockeys, bookies and race goers.

The Suck Valley:

Close to Roscommon town, The Suck valley is an ideal location for fishing or walking. The enthusiastic angler can enjoy coarse, trout and pike angling at its best on the River Suck, its tributaries and its many well known lakes. There are good brown trout stretches interspersed with excellent bream stretches. Rudd and tench flourish at specified points while perch and pike are also in abundance.
It is an ideal location for walking with a 100km Waymarked Walk Way which runs through the Suck River Valley, incorporating parts of counties Roscommon and Galway. It is unusual among Irish Waymarked Walks because for most of its length it lies across lowland farms. It also traverses the boglands and callows along the river Suck with their numerous lakes and drainage channels. The varied landscape includes gentle hills, forests, bogs, meadows and farmland, and the lovely Suck River is crossed no less than six times via old stone/dot.gif bridges.
The monuments of history are everywhere and the bird and plant life offer a delightful study for the botanist, ornithologist and anyone who loves nature. The Way passes through "The Nine Friendly Villages", Ballygar, Creggs, Glinsk, Ballymoe, Ballintober, Dunamon, Castlecoote, Athleague and Mount Talbot.
